Participants will make an artist’s book that uses map-making and storytelling as acts of self-discovery. Those students who also attend the March 24th workshop, “Eastern and Western Papermaking Techniques” have the option of using their hand-made papers in their books. The day will begin with paper painting and an introduction to artists’ books, specifically artists who explore maps in their works. Participants will receive curriculum materials for teaching bookmaking in the classroom. This workshop will be based on the ideas and techniques in the book, Personal Geographies: Explorations in mixed-media mapmaking, by Jill K. Berry. Participants are encouraged (though not required) to browse through this book prior to the workshop. Participants should bring their own lunch. A comprehensive list of materials to bring and directions to the room will be provided when participants RSVP.

Participants will use Balsa Foam to create a printing block. Printing blocks will then be used to emboss in wet clay and print with underglazes onto a ceramic bisque tile. This workshop is meant to get teachers to think a little outside the box with printing techniques for their classroom. Teachers will walk away with two project examples, a lesson plan, additional ceramics information for their classroom, and hopefully a whole lot of inspiration to share with their students. Participants should bring a container to take home their project. Directions to the room will be provided when participants RSVP.
